Hi All, The Churchill Arms in Bulawayo first opened in October 74 when I was just finishing university and, as we lived just around the corner from it, I probably spent more nights there than I should have. There was always great entertainment with revellers sitting around on bar stools and hay bales listening to honky tonk music. Wouldn’t it be great if someone opened up one of those good old fashioned Honky Tonk joints?
Time has flown by, and over the years, the hotel went through many ups and downs. Well, the Cresta Group have now taken over the management to add to their growing Zimbabwe portfolio. Over the past few months they, together with the owners, have spent some $700k refurbishing the establishment. All of the 52 bedrooms and bathrooms have been completely redone with carpets and baths replaced with modern showers and furniture.
Last Friday night I went down to join some 200 guests at the relaunch of the new look Cresta Churchill Hotel. Recently appointed Country Manageress Chipo Mandela cut the requisite ribbon along with the permanent secretary for Tourism, Dr Thokozile Chitepo. I was fortunate to spend time chatting to the latter about all the great things her ministry were putting in place around the country.
Overall I was very impressed with the renovations and had a very pleasant evening – the accommodation was very recommendable and somewhere that you should consider staying over next time you go down to Bulawayo on Business. Ideally placed on the outskirts of the town for me to take my compulsory trip out to the Matopos early on Saturday morning.
