We went along to a fun evening on Saturday night to watch the Annual Ballroom dancing champs at the new hall at Hartmann House – by far the best venue for Dancing competitions in Harare. There was a much large crowd than at recent Dancesport comps – hopefully a sign that more and more folks are starting to appreciate just how good a spectator sport Ballroom dancing really is.
Michelle Mesley is the current Chairman of Dancesport in Zimbabwe and it was such a pleasure to see the innovate ideas that she is starting to bring to the party. This year she arranged for a top judge to come over from Slovakia to join adjudicators from South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Bulawayo and Harare. We also had the pleasant surprise of watching one of South Africa’s leading couples compete against our very best in the Ballroom section – Viennese Waltz, Tango, Quickstep etc. Michelle had also managed to entice 6 couples each from Lesotho and Botswana to join in. The youngsters from Lesotho showed off unbelievably fine dance routines – they were all clearly all under 12 yet giving the finest display of the Pasa Doble watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD7Tr6p8HQo to see how it should be done or Andre Rieu in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMHywFSe4Sc
Even those of you that like to flick a hoof after a sharing a bottle of wine with friends will realise that Dancing is a way of expressing your feelings at any given moment. Good fun when you are not worried about what spectators feel about your ability (or lack thereof). To be a top dancer though you have to be an outgoing sort – an exhibitionist – some people can do it in naturally; others need to learn the correct steps enabling them to let go. Do your kids fit into one of those brackets? En route to learning how to do ballroom dancing one is taught very important lessons – how to stand up straight – chest up and not out; control; etiquette etc. Why not give your children the opportunity to learn this special sport? – none of you will regret it.
