I am over in Australia for a quick visit to catch up with my kids. Last minute dot com special on Emirates via Dubai. The second leg from Dubai took 14 hours but we traveled in their Airbus A 380 – what a magnificent aircraft – so roomy and comfortable – even in Economy Class as I always have to take. The plane was “Empty” – just 200 when it can fit something like 480 passengers. I have traveled a lot but never been in a plane that has had it’s takeoff delayed because of a medical issue – on this trip we had 2 such incidents! One in Lusaka and the other whilst waiting for takeoff in Dubai. Each time they call a doctor; take the passenger off the plane and then the crew has to confirm the identity of every remaining item of Baggage in the stowage above the seats – very tedious.
So, still suffering from the effects of jetlag, I took a stroll down to Regatta for a quiet meal this evening – a Wombles / Corky’s type pub/restaurant where locals go for fun and “to be seen!” I ordered a Salt and Pepper Squid (A$15) plus a schooner of Peroni Beer (half strength) ($6) and a “large” glass of Sauvignon Blanc (A$8 – 4 small sips of house wine).
No wonder all the youngsters drink their fill at home before going out on a Saturday night at 11 to join the party. I was probably the only one not asked to produce an (fake) ID by the well-built bouncer standing smiling at the entrance – don’t know why – maybe he was too scared to! On the walk down there from my Air B&B room one has to follow the signs – walk here – cycle there – can you imagine our poor Kombi drivers – they would not have a clue where to go.
