I bought my first guitar when I was just 20 – paid about R18 for a Spanish guitar from a music shop along West St in Durban. Took it back to Res all neatly wrapped up in a special cardboard box trying hard to hide it from my fellow macho students. In those days Simon & Garfunkel and the Beatles were all the rave so I found out the chords for all of their easier songs and soon became proficient enough to play a few of them to my close friends.
One that I particularly remember was Simon & Garfunkel’s “The leaves that are Green” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwOgXWOX-iE . I recall “singing” –
“I was 21 years when I first wrote this song: I am 22 now but I won’t be for long” When you are young you truly believe that you will live forever and never end up like those old “fuddy duddys” that visit your folks.
Life passes by so quickly and before you know it 40 odd years have gone by and you think back on just what you have achieved in that time.
The Beatles were next – there are many simple chords for their songs that you can download easily now from www.chordie.com.
Last night I looked up one song that is especially significant right now – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJMTbMIPHWM
“When I get older….” Well now that all becomes past tense!
Have a great day – turn up the volume and enjoy a few golden oldie “Beatles” songs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtXrbGR06nE
