HI All, In many parts of the world swimmers gather together on the coldest day of the year to join “The Polar Bear Club”. No wet suits allowed and swimming must be outdoors in an unheated pool. In Canada and the USA this is done on New Year’s Day – it is not, however, recommended that you enter this event coming straight from a long night’s partying! – read below article
Here in Zim my equivalent is to swim 1km in an unheated pool at lunchtime on the day of the solstice – June 21st – tomorrow.
June 21st is reputedly the middle of winter theoretically being the coldest day of the year – the temperature tomorrow in Harare is expected to be 24C – compare to London at 22C – in the middle of their summer!
Today I swam at the Body Active pool at the Race Course on Borrowdale road ($5 entry) with the water temperature sitting at about 19 C – fairly warm for this time of the year.
I am looking for a few people to swim with me tomorrow at 1pm at the same pool to join the Polar Bear Club – see you there. Mike G. PS You can wear a swimming cap
