The Pomona Art Wall along Borrowdale Road is slowly becoming more than just a wall. Through conversations with both Lin Barrie and Sharon Hook, we gathered a deeper understanding of the ongoing work. With the combined efforts of Clean and Green Zimbabwe, Dulux Zimbabwe, CaliGraph, Lin Barrie, Harare SPCA, and several community partners, the space is being reimagined into a brighter, safer and more creative environment for all who pass through and use the area.
The latest mural project came about when Harare SPCA approached artist Lin Barrie to create a painting that would reflect the SPCA’s mission of caring for domestic animals. Lin’s artwork celebrates Zimbabwean people alongside the animals that form part of everyday life. It is a colourful tribute to pets, domestic animals and the important role they play in our homes and communities.
Assisting Lin with the painting were her daughter Kelli Barker, her handyman Biggie, and Clean and Green handyman Leonard. CaliGraph artists Marcus Zvinavashe and Nyasha Jeche, together with their team, also kindly assisted with the smaller hand-lettering and logos needed to complete the SPCA wall.
There was also much appreciation for those who kept the artists and volunteers going with food and drinks during the painting process, including Sharon Hook of Clean and Green Zimbabwe, Samson, who assisted with water supplies by bicycle, Ashley and Rich Pereira of Rio Douro Construction, Matt Austen of Pariah State Bar and Grill Pomona, Paul of Freshly Ground Coffee Bar, Llew Hughes of Kanimambo Restaurant, Kirsty and Sue Williams of Pemcol and Earthy Treats, Sebastien Lallemande and Michele Steemans. Physical assistance was also received from Leonard, CT and Pamu of John Hook and Son. Many of the colours featured in Lin’s mural include “The Blues”, which are Dulux Colours of the Year 2026: Slow Swing, Free Groove and Mellow Flow.
The mural is only one part of a much bigger vision for the Pomona Art Wall area. Clean and Green Zimbabwe has been actively working to transform the space into a cleaner, greener and more community-friendly area. Over 100 old fir trees were removed due to age, with the support of the community and local businesses. The removed stumps were then taken to Hatcliffe, where they were used to support two feeding programmes.
In December 2024, Clean and Green celebrated a major milestone with the successful national tree planting of 14 Acacia Sieberiana trees along the Pomona Art Wall. Six well-established trees were generously donated by Sherry Burt. Bambazonke was also involved in the initiative. The City of Harare Parks and Cemeteries Department, under Mr Chigumbu, played an important role in the event, with his team of 15 attending and supporting the initiative.
Looking ahead, they have a broader vision for the Pomona Art Wall space. Plans include a bicycle track, a water-wise rock garden along the art wall, a bus stop and, one day, an up-and-over bridge. Artist impressions have already been created to help bring this vision to life. There are also three more mural ideas currently being developed, and Clean and Green is in the process of looking for sponsors to help make these possible.
