There are many things that contribute to one’s confidence, one of these main elements that many people have failed to acknowledge is posture. This, believe it or not can determine what the next person thinks of you be it in the world of business or your normal day to day interactions. However, the main aim of the tips given below is to help us all maintain good posture whilst working from home during this lockdown period, so that we do not strain our backs or bodies.
What is posture?
Posture refers to how you position your body whilst standing, sitting or lying down .To have good posture, does not only refer to you sitting or standing properly no. It also includes and involves training yourself to sit, stand and walk in such a way that your ligaments and muscles are going through the least possible strain and pressure they can endure .
Why should you maintain good posture?
1. Helps in reducing the abnormal wear and tear of joint surfaces to aid in the prevention of the onset of arthritis.
2. Keeps bones and joints aligned properly to aid in the rightful function of muscles.
3. Helps keep the spine fixed in normal positions.
4. Helps prevent backaches and muscular pains.
5. Reduces the stress on the ligaments holding the joints of the spine together .
6.Gives you a good appearance.
Tips on how you can maintain good posture.
If you are working from your desk , it is important that you mind how you are seated. Make sure your back is not hunched but straight and your shoulders are not rolling forward. If already experiencing back pains, try not to cross your feet whilst sitting at the desk as this might worsen your pain. Make sure your feet are flat on the floor and your chair is adjusted down to where your knees are at a natural 90-degree angle.
In as much as slouching is hard to avoid, try to keep your legs straight and not twisted or locked. Make sure that your weight is on the balls of your feet, your knees slightly bent and your legs are shoulder width apart. Keep your arms naturally hanging on the sides of your body and try to keep your hips , knees, head and shoulders lined up.
When lying horizontally on your bed, try to sleep on your back. However, be sure to not tilt your neck at a large angle, An angle so wide , you might end up having neck and shoulder pains. To sleep peacefully and at the proper alignment, add a few more pillows to your back and head to support it and keep it in line with the rest of your body. You can also add a pillow below your knees for extra support.
It might take some time to get used to the above tips on how to maintain proper and good posture, however if you constantly practise the tips it won’t take you a while to get used to sitting , standing and lying down properly . After having tried a few of them and still have back pains that are intense, consulting a physician for more information would be advisable.
