Last year after my triathlon I had some time to kill before my return flight to Zim, so I took the opportunity to drive down to the beautiful Margaret River area some 270km south of Perth. I was staying in an Air B&B on a golf course in Dunsborough- 20km south of Busselton where my event had taken place. My landlord, Kate, had grown up as a surfer in California and come out to study for a PhD in Perth. Her thesis was all about using meteorology to work out where the waves were going to give the best results for Surfing competitions! Kate suggested I drive down to a place called Prevelly where they were going to hold the
interstate Surf Champs that morning.
Prevelly is 45 min from Dunsborough and the drive there is along a lovely, hilly road lined with tall Aus trees interspersed with the lushest green vineyards similar to what you would expect around Stellenbosch. I had breakfast at the White Elephant Restaurant overlooking clear aquamarine seas. As I sat down a group of Ocean swimmers were finishing their morning’s exercise – 1.5k swim in clear blue seas protected from the sharks by a long reef around the edge of the bay. Needless to say I returned the next day to swim with them all.
After coffee I drove along to the surf competition and was privileged to witness some stunning surfing displays in 3-4 m waves – young teenage guys and gals epitomising the standard perception of surfers – all with toned bods and long blonde hair. Plenty long range cameras with the fanciest of lenses staying focused on their every move in the seas.
Later that day I drove down to Hamelin Bay – well known for the Sting Rays that glide around the beachfront. They glide right up to you and are harmless -unless you provoke them and feel their anger with a quick flick of their long thin tails!
If you are looking for a holiday destination next year and have a passion for good wines and beaches, I suggest you think seriously about spending a few weeks around the Margaret River. I can put you in touch with a few travel agents to help with your plans. Ciao Mike G
PS I couldn’t resist taking a photo of the Boxer Dog up in a special Dogs Waiting room outside the local Coles supermarket.
