Welcome to 2022! A brand-new year, full of possibilities, opportunities, and new beginnings. This is the perfect time to plan ahead, dream big, and take action in making your dreams a reality. To move forward successfully, however, it is important to look back reflectively.
Review, Reset, Renew is a great way to help you do just that. Look back on the last twelve months, take stock of where you are at right now, and move into this year with renewed enthusiasm, purpose, and light-heartedness.
So, treat yourself to a little “you” time and let us begin … If you are a visual person, you might want to grab a pen and notebook for this process.
Let us begin by Reviewing. Looking back is an important part of this exercise because it reminds you of all that you have accomplished, learned, and overcome in the past year. I find it helpful to flip back through my diary, my photos, and my social media posts as a way of refreshing my memory. If you prefer, you can just sit quietly and go over the past year, month by month, in your mind. Then answer these questions:
- What were your biggest successes?
- What brought you the most joy?
- What wise decisions did you make?
- Who was there for you?
- What did you learn about yourself?
- What obstacles did you overcome?
The next step is Resetting. This entails evaluating where you feel you are at right now concerning where you would like to be. If you want, you can do this in various areas of your life, for example, health, career, family, and so on. Ask yourself questions like:
- What do I need more of?
- What do I need to let go of?
- What would I like to bring into my life?
- What would I like to change or improve?
Finally, move on to the Renew phase. This is the blueprint for the next twelve months that will keep you focused and motivated. I call it Renew because some of your goals or resolutions from the past will need to be carried forward into the coming year, for example, a commitment to a healthy lifestyle or long-term changes. By referring back to the answers you have given in the Reset stage, you should be able to set your goals. For example, if you said that you need to let go of being negative, a goal could be to practice gratitude daily.
Goals and resolutions are crucial because they are a way of taking control of your own life. A great metaphor is a boat on the sea. If you do not use your oars or sails, you will not be the one who determines where you will end up. You will be at the mercy of the currents, you will not be in charge of your destination or your journey there.
Goals and resolutions should be SMART. This is the acronym that outlines the key elements to make them attainable, namely:
An accountability partner is also an effective way to boost your success rate. This can be a person who can hold you to task and keep you on track or an app that you can download and use daily.
It is also important to ask yourself what personal attributes you need to have to keep you moving in the right direction. For instance, one of my goals for this year is to write and publish my second children’s book. SMARTing this goal was the easy and obvious part. Breaking it down into steps, like doing research and setting time aside every day to write, was easy. But to do these things, I need to BE a certain person, I have to cultivate certain personal attributes, such as being disciplined and organised, to mention just a couple.
I am a great believer in the power of visual aids. Visualise to Actualise. Vision boards, year planners, and any other tool that resonates with you to depict what you want to achieve, who you want to be, will help to keep you on track and motivated.
Finally, you need to commit. There is no outcome without action. Every day, schedule and do at least three things towards your goals. If you have resolved to increase your media presence to boost your business, for example, you could post on social media, write some content and reach out to one prospective client.
Review, Reset, Renew is a great way to a successful 2022. Try it!
Live mindfully and blossom
