Hello, it’s week 2 of the Sip and Read book review and today’s pick is Dark Matter by Blake Crouch.
Blake Crouch has created a science fiction genre of reading that is something like I have never read before. It is complex, thought-provoking and the perfect balance of suspense, sci-fi, romance and blockbuster! Best way to sum this up, one of the most unique and original stories I have read in a long time. I loved the whole premise of this story and was enthralled the entire time and did not want to put this book down. (But we all have to sleep and work, right?)
Do you ever wonder what your life might have looked like at the end of the road not taken? If you went to the left instead of the right? Option A or Option B? What if we could live out the choices we never made but wished we made? Dark matter is centred around Jason, who took option B of his life. He is married with a family and works as a college professor. One day, he is kidnapped and wakes up as option A. A single, successful scientist who created a breakthrough technology that will change the world. He has woken up in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by unfamiliar people who all think he is somebody he is not. What happened to him? Where is his beloved wife and son? These are questions that he will try to answer but, as he discovers more and more about his situation he starts to doubt what is real and what is not or if he will ever make it back to his life, and whether it even existed at all. Instead of relishing option A, Jason wants his old life back and his family. What follows is a succession of events that finally lead him back to his family. But there is a mirror image of him sitting at the table with them. Who is this other Jason and what does he want with his option B life?
Reading this controversial book was mind-bending and exciting. I felt inextricably connected to the storyline because I shared Jason’s horror and the fear that he would never make it back to the family that he loves. I could feel my eyes getting wider as I read further into the storyline because the plot twist is just the perfect kind. So many times I thought I should have seen this coming; it was obvious, but I did not see it coming at all!! Maybe this book is not for you but perhaps there is a different version of you somewhere and it is perfect for them. Do yourself justice and give this book a shot!
Rutendo Makubika bio :
I have been an avid reader since my teens when I was introduced to my first classic book, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. That was the start of my love affair with books. I am always on the lookout for new reads so bring on your recommendations if you have any. Happy Reading!
