The Healthy Mind

With Dr. Olga Filippa Nel, Clinical Psychologist

Be brutally honest with yourself, are you making excuses instead of progress? What are these excuses costing you? Benjamin Franklin said, “he that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else”.

Excuses are destructive and dysfunctional.  They hold you back from growing and becoming all that you can be. They can affect many areas of your life. They damage you in the eyes of others, who will not view you as trustworthy and dependable.  They negatively impact on your health and wellness, especially if you are using excuses not to take care of your mind and body. Action is required if you are to maximise your fitness levels, adhere to a wholesome diet, kick those bad habits and make those positive changes a reality.

Excuses limit your success because they can become self-fulfilling prophecies. The more you use them, the more you start believing them as being true and justified. They can even prevent you from enjoying your leisure time when they stop you from making the most of opportunities to experience new and exciting possibilities.

If you want to choose success over failure, find your purpose and stop making excuses. Move forward with deliberate, action-oriented steps instead. Start by taking responsibility for your life. List all the areas where you tend to make excuses and ask yourself why you are doing it. Removing excuses means removing the blocks that have been limiting your potential. Identify the gaps between where you are and where you want to be and start closing them today.

Find the passion within you. Focus on your gifts and talents, on your areas of strength and let them guide you forward, with confidence and clarity. Believe in yourself and in your abilities. Let your life be excuse-free and reap its rewards: power, respect, fulfilment, success and so many more.

Live mindfully and blossom!
