Movember November, the month dedicated to Men’s Health Awareness. Consequently, I write this article especially for all the amazing men out there. So here are a few tips to stay on top of your game, because you need to take care of yourself in order to give your best to others!

Remember to be holistic in your approach. A healthy mind needs a healthy body to function optimally. Prevention is better than cure. Make November the time of year when you visit your family doctor for a thorough physical check-up.

Exercise daily to help your body from head to toe. Physical activity is not just great for making you stronger and control your body weight, it also improves mental health, by lowering stress levels and increasing endorphins, the “feel good” chemicals. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Drink in moderation, if you have to!

Be a gentleman and treat everyone around you with kindness and respect. Spend time with family and friends. Show them that they matter to you. Laugh and hug. Research shows that the quality of our life is determined by the quality of our relationships. Give of yourself to others and give back, as being of service improves your resilience and self-esteem.

Create balance in your life by embracing a mindful lifestyle. This means being truly present in the moment, so that you can give of your very best and derive enjoyment from your daily activities. Develop a strong value system. Values define what is truly important to you and clarify the direction of your life. They also make goal-setting, prioritising and decision-making easier. Follow your passions and don’t forget to relax and unwind.

Lastly – and this is a tough one – get in touch with your feelings. Acknowledge them and deal with them in a way that is productive, not destructive. Open up and talk about them to someone if you are struggling to handle them.

The Dalai Lama said that “The real meaning of our life, which we all pursue … is to be happy.” Take his advice and enjoy each and every minute.
