Saturday morning at Newlands Shops was transformed into a vibrant, car-free hub of activity as the community gathered for an exciting Open Streets event. The initiative created a safe and welcoming space where families, friends, cyclists and even walkers could enjoy a fun-filled morning while promoting sustainable transport, physical activity and social connection. The event encouraged residents to rethink how streets can be used, not just for vehicles, but as shared public spaces that foster healthier lifestyles and stronger community bonds.
This successful event was made possible through the support of sponsors including Deaf Zimbabwe Trust (DZT), GIZ, City of Harare, AA Zimbabwe, Mimosa Mining Company, Hitbay, and DPZA, whose collective commitment to community development and sustainability was clearly evident.
One of the most impactful engagements of the day was a conversation with representatives from Deaf Zimbabwe Trust. DZT is a voluntary organisation dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights and interests of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) people in Zimbabwe.
It was originally established to advance the rights of Deaf children and has grown into a strong advocate for inclusion, education and accessibility. They operate a school in Greendale, providing tailored education and support to Deaf learners. Their presence at the event was educational as many attendees had the opportunity to see a sign language alphabet chart and learn how to communicate using basic sign language letters. Their inclusion showed that sustainability and community development must go hand in hand with inclusivity. True progress means ensuring that no one is left behind.
