This past weekend, I visited the Garden Fayre at the Italian Club, a community market offering plants, trees, handcrafted items, books, biltong and freshly prepared food. From around 9 am, there was a steady flow of people making their way through the stalls. Some arrived with a clear plan of what they were looking for, while others simply came to enjoy the fresh air and browse at their leisure. The atmosphere was unhurried and welcoming.

Plant lovers were spoilt for choice. A variety of plants and trees were on display, ranging from hardy garden favourites to smaller potted options ideal for patios and indoor spaces. Beyond the greenery, the fayre showcased an appealing mix of local products. Stalls offered books, handcrafted items and artisan goods. The diversity of offerings made it easy to move from one table to the next, discovering something new at every turn.

The aroma of burgers and steak rolls on the grill drifted through the air, with many visitors pausing for a bite before continuing their stroll, balancing takeaway parcels alongside their purchases. I opted for garlic chilli biltong from the biltong bar, a choice I can highly recommend.

As some visitors left satisfied with their finds, others arrived to take their place, keeping the energy consistent throughout the day. It was not a loud or hurried affair, but rather a calm and steady gathering that allowed space for conversation and engagement.

The Garden Fayre also reflects a broader culture at the Italian Club, which regularly hosts food fayres featuring local farmers and suppliers. These events provide a valuable platform for small businesses and promote support for locally sourced products.
