This past weekend I had the privilege of attending a run organised by KidzCan Zimbabwe together with St Ignatius College. The run was held in honour of former student Craig Jaison, who sadly passed away a few years ago. All proceeds raised will go towards supporting children currently battling cancer and helping to raise awareness about a disease that, while often associated with adults, affects thousands of children worldwide.

What stood out most that morning was the incredible sense of community. Former students of St Ignatius arrived in numbers, many bringing along their families and friends. It was touching to witness generations come together, united by a collective desire to support a cause far greater than themselves.

The event also highlighted the remarkable work being done by KidzCan Zimbabwe. The organisation strives for a compassionate world where every child with cancer has the chance to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. Their mission focuses on increasing survival rates and ensuring the highest quality of life for children through treatment support, emotional care, and advocacy, all within a loving and supportive environment.

Behind this inspiring organisation is Andrea Whatman, whose own story of surviving childhood cancer became the driving force behind the founding of KidzCan Zimbabwe. Her personal triumph over the disease led her to dedicate her life to helping children across Zimbabwe who are facing the same battle she once fought.

Events like these serve as a powerful reminder that cancer does not discriminate. It can affect anyone, at any age. But when a child faces such a diagnosis, the weight of the illness can be even more heartbreaking. Many young children do not yet have the words to fully describe what they are feeling, the pain, the fear, the confusion. They simply endure it with a bravery far beyond their years.

Let us all be reminded of the power of community, the importance of empathy, and the difference we can make when we stand together for a meaningful cause. Whether through donations, volunteering, raising awareness, or simply supporting initiatives like this run, there are many ways we can help organisations like KidzCan continue their vital work, because every child deserves the chance to grow, to dream, and to live a full and healthy life.
