Slow Sunday mornings call for a good cup of coffee, a quiet corner, and a moment to just be. This past Sunday, I found exactly that at The Fridge, tucked away at 63B Ridgeway North in Highlands.
The space strikes that perfect balance between cozy and refreshing. You have the option to sit outside and soak in the open air or settle inside where the atmosphere feels warm and inviting. I chose a spot indoors, where I was treated to a calming view of beautiful flowers and, interestingly, a leather bags store just within sight, one I’ve already decided is worth revisiting when I catch it open.
With a flat white in hand and a generous slice of chocolate cake (which was every bit as indulgent as it sounds), I settled into the comfort of my surroundings and got lost in my current read. The End, the final book in the Hlomu Series by South African author Dufu Busani-Dube, has had me completely hooked this past week.
There’s something deeply special about reading African authors. Their stories carry a familiarity that’s hard to explain but easy to feel. It’s in the way they write, the characters they build, and the worlds they create, it all feels close to home. Almost as if, regardless of where we are on the continent, we share a language of experience.
And maybe that’s what made the moment at The Fridge even more memorable, a blend of good coffee, comforting space, and a story that felt like it belonged to me, too.
Coffee fact: The flat white originated in the Southern Hemisphere. The beloved flat white is widely credited to either Australia or New Zealand - both claim it!
