Mountain Biking

Hi All,

I am always encouraged by companies that give back to their community by sponsoring sporting events and will, where possible, go out of my way to support their efforts. Halsteds, Electrosales and Kefalos are 3 such organisations that sponsor Mountain Bike (MTB) events in Harare throughout the year – surely a part of their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).

So, last Saturday morning I hitched my mountain Bike onto the back of my vehicle and headed off to Chabwino Store some 30 km out of Harare on the Shamva Road. Kefalos were the sponsor for the day with about 100 of us enthusiastic Cyclists riding through the surrounding area – the pros did 48km whilst we amateurs struggled through a gruelling 32km course ably set up by the Winterton’s. Mike and Pat Gill were there as usual with their well-stocked halfway setup – from baked potatoes to orange slices and bananas. Kefalos had taken out their Yoghurt Ice Cream machine to the Finish Line and we were all given delicious samples to try out whilst we waited for our bacon and egg rolls. I confess that I did have a second helping of the Yoghurt Ice Cream!

For one reason or another – broken collarbone to training for the New York Marathon – I haven’t been involved with MTB for a few months so I was pleasantly surprised to meet up with a large contingent of riders from the Chova Cycling club. Mountain Biking is a whole lot more fun at this time of the year with old guys like me acting like naughty kids sprinting through puddles to splash your riding mate.

For those of you that haven’t spent any time at the gym over the past 20 or so years (yes you know who you are!), riding a bike is probably the easiest way to ease back into regular exercise – Contact Alan Winterton at ActiveSportsactivesports@gmail.com for more details on how to purchase/borrow a basic mountain bike and start the ball rolling. See you on the track soon.

Ciao Mike G.
