Over time, Harare has developed quite a selection of established markets where people can spend a few hours over the weekend browsing, shopping, discovering local products, and meeting friends. Among the many options around the city, Old Stables Market has, for me, stood out as one of the very best.
What I particularly enjoy is that you don’t necessarily have to arrive with a shopping list. You can simply come along, wander around and see what catches your eye. There is plenty to look at, plenty to taste and, importantly, plenty of space to sit down and enjoy yourself afterwards. The atmosphere makes it easy to turn a quick shopping trip into a family fun-filled day or a relaxed outing with friends. And as they say, it is “Your trusted source of goodness.”
There is certainly no shortage of options. One moment you might catch the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifting across from one direction, and a few steps later you could find yourself following the unmistakable scent of braaied chicken coming from somewhere else.
What also makes Old Stables appealing is the quality and variety of the vendors. There seems to be a real emphasis on people bringing products and services that are well presented, interesting and, in many cases, top of the range. It is a good opportunity to support local entrepreneurs while discovering something you may not find in your usual shopping routine.
Be warned: you may go looking for one little thing and leave wondering how your shopping bag got so full. Or you may not buy anything at all and simply enjoy a coffee, a bite to eat, and some time catching up with friends. That is exactly what I found myself doing this past Saturday.
If you have never been, or if it has been a while since your last visit, it might be worthwhile popping in one of these Saturdays. Take a wander around, see what is on offer and let the market surprise you. You never know what might catch your eye, or tempt your taste buds!
