Road Safety Reminders | Back-to-School Season – Zimbabwe

As the back-to-school season begins across Zimbabwe, many families are balancing school fees, uniforms, fuel, groceries, and daily transport costs. While budgets may be under pressure, road safety is never optional.

Zimbabwean roads demand extra care. Changing weather, damaged surfaces, livestock, pedestrians, and unexpected breakdowns can turn an ordinary trip into a serious situation. Please take note of the following Road Safety Reminders:

🛑 Brake before the bend, not in it
Many of our roads have loose gravel, potholes, or uneven surfaces, especially after rain. Brake early and gently. Remember, the speed limit is guidance, not a target.

⚙️ Keep your speed sensible
High speeds reduce reaction time on narrow roads, urban shortcuts, and highways shared with slow-moving vehicles. Often, the safest speed is well below the posted limit.

🌙 Stay alert, even on familiar routes
Knowing the road does not remove risk. Livestock, pedestrians, unmarked roadworks, broken-down vehicles, or debris can appear without warning — especially early mornings and evenings.

👀 Always stop within the distance you can see
Poor lighting, mist, dust, and oncoming glare can reduce visibility. If you need every metre to stop, you are already travelling too fast.

🚜 Be patient behind slower or overloaded vehicles
Many vehicles travel with heavy loads, farm equipment, or trailers. Hidden dips, bends, and junctions can turn an unsafe overtake into a fatal one. Only overtake when the road ahead is completely clear and safe.

🚶🏾‍♀️ Give space and remove distractions
Pedestrians, school children, vendors, and cyclists often share the road. Slow down in residential areas, growth points, and school zones. Putting the phone away saves lives.

Good driving is not about how fast you can go.
It is about how much time, space, and thinking room you give yourself when conditions change.

And when the unexpected happens, especially during financially demanding seasons, roadside assistance should never become an extra burden.
