The VAWZ Scruffs Dog Show was one of those events that has a way of winning you over. Everywhere you looked were wagging tails, proud owners and plenty of personality. It was also reassuring to see how responsibly the event was run, with every dog on a leash and owners ensuring their four-legged companions were on their best behaviour.
The competition featured a variety of entertaining classes, from the Coolest Pup and Most Appealing Dog to the Loveliest Lady, with each category drawing smiles and applause from the crowd. My personal favourite had to be the Scruffiest Dog category because one of the winning dogs completely stole the show because of how enormous it was. It’s definitely not the kind of breed you come across every day. But maybe I did have another favourite; even if you’re not a dog expert, it’s hard not to admire how striking Huskies are.
Beyond the fun competitions, the event also highlighted the important work being done by Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Zimbabwe (VAWZ). They are a private voluntary organisation committed to improving animal welfare standards across Zimbabwe. Working under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the organisation responds to reports of animal cruelty and neglect involving domestic animals, livestock and wildlife. Their work also includes inspecting facilities such as abattoirs and crocodile farms, running vaccination and sterilisation programmes in rural communities, and operating large animal clinics in both Harare and Beitbridge.
Much of this work is made possible through public donations, corporate sponsorships and fundraising initiatives like the Scruffs Dog Show. Click here to learn more on their website.
I left with a greater appreciation for the people who take care of dogs and the incredible work being done to protect their welfare.
