WHAT’S BEHIND THE RISE IN FATALITIES ON OUR ZIM ROADS? THE INCREASE IN ROAD FATALITIES IS SHOCKING AND WORRYING…
The percentage increase in the number of road fatalities this August is shocking and worrying and points to the need for urgent intervention and not promises of change. Drive Zimbabwe Roadside Assistance (DZRA) says the horrific figures, released. will not be dealt with effectively unless real, effective amendments are made to current road safety practices. As the shocking figures prove our road safety is only taking a turn for the worse, the question of why Zim drivers are setting this traumatic record-history has raised eyebrows and concerns.
The fact that many people died on the country’s roads in a short period, indicates that current approaches are simply ineffective. And unless urgent intervention focuses on road safety education, more extensive traffic law enforcement, and better prosecution of offenders, these numbers will not reduce. Also, focusing on single aspects of road safety such as drunk driving while ignoring others such as pedestrian safety will not result in significant reductions in road fatalities,” notes DZRA.
Given the current road safety framework in the country – one which continually blames human error as the major cause of crashes and road deaths – these targets will remain unattainable. Unless a more comprehensive approach which focuses on safer drivers, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer speeds and better post-crash intervention, and involves inputs from communities, our dire road fatality statistics will never improve
“There’s nothing that you just put down to sheer bad luck, they’re all put down to humans doing the wrong thing and human behaviour,” B Tom said. “Innocent parties have lost their lives in these crashes, too … the person who’s at fault in the crash may even survive, but then they have to live with for the rest of their life that they’ve killed somebody else.”
“We also forget the fact that even if you survive these accidents, you might not go on to be another fatal statistic, but your life as you know will be lost because of the injuries you can sustain and also, obviously the psychological damage that can come with being involved in a serious accident will change you
Ways to lessen the risk of road crashes
- Stay alert and aware
- Lessen any possible distractions
- Always wear a safety belt and safety equipment before getting on the road
- Use your indicator
- Do not rush unnecessarily
- Keep a safe distance from others on the road
- Avoid driving in extreme weather conditions if possible
- Know and follow the road rules at all times
- Do not drive for long hours without taking a break
- Keep your car in good condition and have it serviced regularly
“Instead of driving as though it is just second nature, you have to be aware of paying attention to everything that you do at all times … Drivers have to make the conscious decision to be safe and alert during every second that they’re on the road.”
Too much money and time has been spent on a system which, in our view, is poorly constructed and which will not lead to a reduction in road fatalities or an improvement in road safety in general. instead of trying to revive a system which will ultimately fail, the government needs to be well advised to focus its energies on implementing effective road safety solutions for the country as a matter of urgency.”
