For Harare's wine enthusiasts, Tannin Tuesdays organised by Elixir have become a much-loved tradition. They have evolved into a regular experience that brings together people who share a curiosity for good wine, great conversation, and learning something new. This October marks two years of Elixir introducing guests to the fascinating world of wine.
The experience gives you a deeper understanding of what's in your glass. If my tablemates are anything to go by, many arrived thinking wine is simply divided into red and white. By the end of the evening, we had learned that wines are classified by the grape varieties they're made from. White wines may be produced from grapes such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, or Muscat (Moscato). Red wines, meanwhile, are made from varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz (Syrah). Each grape variety has its own unique character, resulting in different aromas, flavours, and textures.
The tasting also introduces guests to terms often seen on wine menus but not always fully understood. You'll learn the difference between a light-bodied, medium-bodied, and full-bodied wine. Light-bodied wines are generally delicate and refreshing, while full-bodied wines feel richer and fuller on the palate, often with more intense flavours and a longer finish. You'll also begin to understand how sweetness, acidity, tannins, and oak ageing all contribute to the personality of a wine.
After that, you're not just enjoying a glass of wine; you understand why you enjoy it. So, the next time you spot a Tannin Tuesdays event featured in the Ndeipi Weekender, don't scroll past it. Book your ticket, gather a few friends, and experience an evening that's equal parts social, educational, and delicious. It will be an experience that's well worth raising a glass to.
