Most of us mere mortals go through life believing we are immortal. Major medical issues only happen to others – not me! Medical science has, however, made enormous leaps and bounds in recent years making it possible to spot potential ailments in one’s body almost from day 1 potentially giving us a chance to do something about them before it is too late.
Two issues that have taken centre stage, in that regard, in recent times are Breast and Prostate Cancer. So a couple of years ago a few concerned citizens decided to help raise awareness of them by dedicating the months of October and November as “Think Pink October” and “Movember” (moustache). Here in Zimbabwe we have two prominent events in the Think Pink Golf day at Chapman introduced by Cath Riley and the Think Pink Triathlon day set up by the Zimbabwe Triathlon Association.
Both fixtures attract good crowds and are great fun to be involved in. I recommend you take your family along to Mt Pleasant Swimming pool this Sunday 8th October (9am) to participate in the many swim, run and cycle events being held there. Make sure you all dress in crazy pinks and take a hat. Coffee plus cheap Bacon and Egg rolls galore will be there to be bought afterwards for ravenous participants and spectators.
I went along to Chapman late yesterday afternoon to catch up with the golf event. Alex Stovold, Cath Riley and their committee did indeed put together an day for all 192 players to remember. All participants were given a bright pink T Shirt and cap
and most holes had gin tents at the Tee Boxes. Those stands most likely to be remembered are the ones that had quirky tricks to entertain passing golfers – like the chipping into tyres by Tiger Wheel and Tyre or the throwing of a dart at pink balloons to win a cap from Restapedic. Others like Health Point had a couple of ladies advising interested parties where they could go for testing.
The “Raison d’Etre” for all of this is, obviously, to remind us all to make time for those annual check-ups. See you all on Sunday at Mount Pleasant Pool – I’ll be kitted out in a bright red tri-costume avec swimming cap! Ciao Mike G.
