ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AGENCY

FINAL WARNING TO RESIDENTS: STOP BURNING WASTE

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) hereby issues a STRONG WARNING to all residents who are burning household waste, plastics, rubbish, garden waste or any other waste on their residential premises.

BURNING WASTE IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE METHOD OF WASTE DISPOSAL.

Residents are reminded that waste must be managed and disposed of in an environmentally sound manner in accordance with the Environmental Management Act [Chapter 20:27] and applicable regulations, including the Environmental Management (Effluent and Solid Waste Disposal) Regulations, 2007 (SI 6 of 2007).

Section 70 of the Environmental Management Act prohibits the disposal of waste in a manner that causes environmental pollution or ill health. Section 83 further prohibits the dumping or leaving of litter except in designated containers or places.

Residents are further warned that burning waste and causing emissions that pollute the atmosphere may constitute an offence under the Environmental Management Act [Chapter 20:27], as read with the Environmental Management (Atmospheric Pollution Control) Regulations, SI 72 of 2009.

ENFORCEMENT ACTION

The Agency will conduct inspections and take enforcement action against persons found burning waste.

Any resident found contravening the law may be issued with a fine and/or face further legal action, as provided for under the applicable legislation.

Residents are therefore directed to:

  1. STOP BURNING WASTE IMMEDIATELY.
  2. Dispose of waste only through approved and designated waste-management systems and facilities.
  3. Do not burn plastics, household rubbish, garden waste or other waste materials on residential premises.
  4. Comply with all lawful instructions issued by EMA and other responsible authorities.

THIS IS A FINAL WARNING.

Continued non-compliance will result in enforcement action and the imposition of penalties in accordance with the law.

Do not wait until an enforcement officer visits your property.

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY. PROTECT YOUR COMMUNITY. PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT.

COMPLY WITH THE LAW. STOP BURNING WASTE.
